Telephone Tech Support Scam – Watch Out

From an Internet forum for folk musicians, we’ve had reports of an ugly bank-details scam preying on people’s fear of having a virus on a computer – a scam that would be especially damaging for small businesses.

What happens is that someone calls you up pretending to be from a tech support company or a well known company such as Microsoft. The scammers will claim that there are viruses on your system, or other serious problems, and offer to remove them. If you follow their instructions, you’ll end up giving them remote access to your machine. They’ll then ask for your credit card or bank details – to pay for their ‘help’ - and will end up with remote access to your cash, too.

As small businesses know, our computers can contain all sorts of important information; our bank details, notes on things we need to do for customers and so on. Not only is this scam a risk to your business, but also anyone you deal with regularly whose details – however scant – might be on your computer.

If a stranger rings you up and offers you help, they probably want something for themselves instead. Don’t let strangers do anything with your computer and never, ever, entertain the thought of sharing your credit card or bank details with someone that YOU didn’t contact first. (Such as another small business that you know well and ring up to buy something from.)

As I mentioned earlier, we first heard about this from a folk musician message board. Its members were helping each other and sharing information – the best things about any online community. So, if you hear of any scams that might affect small businesses (or people in general) do let us know, either by emailing us directly or leaving a comment.

Here’s a video of this kind of scam in action; I assume this is in America, but the scam will be pretty much the same wherever it’s carried out. This is the first in a series of four videos.

Ripped off: Century Link and Dish Network are trying to steal 4.61 from me by billing me for services I did not use, after a contract ended. They claim I owe them a pro-rated fee for the extra time it took to “Port” my home phone to another provider. The Scam, Lie, and theft is that they are charging me for a delay that was caused when one of their employees arbitrarily reversed my cancellation of services, and they are billing me for the delay. NOT LEGAL. DISH Network for their part are billing me for an HD upgrade Installation (through Century Link) after canceling my bundled Dish services. They back-billed me on the old canceled contract for a service that was included in the NEW HD For Life Contract I signed with them. HD For Life includes: Free Installation, upgrade HD DVR’s and 3 months Free HBO/Showtime are included when you sign a 2 year contract and sign up for auto billing….which I did. If you have similar problems, watch the Video and send me an email. Both of these Scumbags demand payment from me knowing full well that the facts support that I owe them nothing.

Question by serrsly: my work made me sign something that i am unsure of, if i am a victim of telephone scam can i be held liable?
Scammers called a few of our stores and ask various questions to the employee that answers
they tape the conversation and slice the tape to make it seem that the employee have authorized changes and accepted their fees

They made all employees of the company sign something that said, any cost to the company as result of an employee talking to a solicitor will be deducted from that employees pay.
we are to hang up if a solicitor calls.

is this legal even? i was unsure when i signed it, but i had to so i did.
any input would be helpful. thanks.
i understood it, i was just wondering if it is ethical and/or legal, i don’t talk to the solicitors anyway, i play with them and say WHAT, WHAT and other things, or i just say stupid stuff or hang up on them, now i just hang up. why are some of you so rude?

Question by Mikey: Who can I report a suspected telephone scam to, and how do I do it?
I was rung today and the caller hung up as soon as I answered. I pressed 14713 to ring them back. It said that it was “glade kitchens”, but I have never heard of them nevermind called them before. A quick web search yielded no results on a company with that name. I’m convinced that this is a scam to get me to ring a premium rate number and I’d like to report it. I’m in the UK.

Best answer:

Answer by Mi Atheist Girl
Call your local police on the non-emergency line. This way, they can look into it, and also warn others about the scam, before they are taken in by it.
