Sympathy and kindness are innate in humans. It is why charitable institutions spring like mushroom in every nation. This is no different for the Land Down Under.

Australia is one of those countries that are known to be benevolent. As long as people, especially children, need help, regardless of their citizenship and location in the world, Australia extends a helping hand. With help from hundreds of Australians, medical procedures, education and food relief become readily available.

However, just as there are good people, there are also those who will take advantage of heartwarming situations. As sad as it may seem but it is a fact that perpetrators use charitable causes to milk money out of good citizens. Credit card charity scam is one of them.

One example is the case of the Bangladesh conjoined twins which Australians dearly helped with the operation. The entire world stood nervous and hopeful witnesses as these children underwent surgery and therapy at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. And while this was coming about, scammers were calling up homes asking for people’s best credit card donations. Naturally, unsuspecting Australians answered to this call. Only to find out in the end that the callers were never part of the charity and that their money never reached the twins.

This is only one example of how scammers deceit kindness in exchange for their own good. Everyday, there are other forms of charity scams that Australians fall unsuspecting victims for. But to help counteract this swindling, Australians must be aware of the following:

Should they want to donate to a cause, they must directly contact the charity.
When they receive a call asking for donations, they must first confirm with the charity involved if indeed they have this person or group that ask for donations on their part.
Australians should never respond and give their credit card information over the phone. The same thing goes over the internet.
A tax deductible receipt should be provided whenever Australians make a donation.
They must only give to charity collectors who have proper and valid identifications.
For in-person collection, Australians must drop their donations to a sealed tin can bearing the cause or charity’s official logo.

Helping is a very noble act and Australians must be proud of it. However, scammers are everywhere. But by spotting and knowing how to avoid them, Australians can ensure that their donations go to the rightful recipients.

Charity scams and crooks using non-profits for personal gain are rare but they do happen. What I like better is lending with micro-loans instead of giving donations. Then you know where your money goes and you avoid any scammers. Please share this.
